"How long does snus last" means three different things: how long a pouch stays under your lip, how long a sealed can keeps, and how long an opened can stays fresh. Here's the short version of each, plus how fast a pouch kicks in and where to keep your cans.
Quick answer: Typical guidance puts a pouch under the lip for a few minutes up to about an hour (VELO says up to 30 minutes for its own), so follow your pack and take stronger ones out sooner. A sealed can keeps until its printed date, and an opened one stays good while the lid stays shut and the pouches still smell and taste fresh. Browse our tobacco-free snus by strength.
How long does snus last? The three answers at a glance
Each row has its own section below.
| Meaning of "last" | Short answer | What decides it |
|---|---|---|
| Under the lip | Typical guidance puts it between a few minutes and an hour. VELO says up to 30 minutes for its pouches. | Strength, pouch format and your own tolerance. The guidance on your pack always comes first. |
| Sealed can | Until the best-before date on the can. VELO's own figure is about a year from manufacture. | The brand's date on the can. Other brands may differ from VELO. |
| Opened can | There's no official figure. It lasts as long as the pouches stay moist, smell right and still have flavour. | Keeping the lid shut and storing the can somewhere cool and dry. |
| Kick-in | Delivery starts as soon as it goes in; most of the nicotine comes through in roughly the first 10 minutes (Azzopardi et al. 2025, BAT-funded). There's no reliable figure for when you'll feel it. | Strength, pH and your own tolerance. |
A quick note on "snus" in the UK
In the UK, people who say "snus" almost always mean tobacco-free nicotine pouches. That's what SnusBox sells. We don't sell tobacco snus.
As of October 2026, selling tobacco for oral use (traditional snus) has been illegal in the UK since 1992 under the Tobacco for Oral Use (Safety) Regulations 1992. The Tobacco and Vapes Act 2026 re-enacts the ban from 29 October 2026 (s.8).
This matters for storage. A lot of the fridge, freezer and "lasts X weeks" advice you'll find online was written for tobacco snus, and it doesn't automatically apply to pouches. For more background, see Swedish snus vs UK nicotine pouches and whether snus is legal in the UK.
How long to keep a snus pouch in
The published ranges don't agree with each other. WebMD says anywhere from five minutes to an hour. UK retailers commonly quote 20–60 minutes. VELO says up to 30 minutes for its pouches. No single official figure covers every brand, so the guidance on your own pack is the one to follow.
Real-world habits vary just as much. In a BAT-funded study (Azzopardi et al., J Clin Pharmacol, 2025), Danish users averaged 19 minutes per pouch and Swedish users averaged 47. The authors suggest Sweden's long tobacco snus tradition may explain some of that gap.
Park the pouch between your gum and lip and leave it there. Don't chew it or swallow it. If it feels too strong, take it out. You don't have to see out the full time.
What changes how long a pouch lasts
- Nicotine strength: a stronger pouch feels more intense, so it should come out sooner (see below).
- Pouch format: mini, slim and XL pouches behave differently over time.
- Moisture: it changes how a pouch releases nicotine, but results vary by brand.
- Your mouth: everyone's mouth is different, so the same pouch can feel different from person to person.
- Your tolerance: what feels mild to one regular user can feel like plenty to another.
How long does snus take to kick in?
A nicotine pouch starts delivering nicotine as soon as it goes in. In a BAT-funded study (Azzopardi et al., 2025), the biggest share came through in roughly the first 10 minutes, whatever the strength, and delivery then slowed until the pouch came out. There's no reliable "you'll feel it in X seconds" figure.
In that study, blood nicotine rose sharply from the start of use with every pouch tested. The first blood sample was taken at five minutes, so the data can't pin down an exact moment you'll notice it.
Many people notice a tingle or mild burn under the lip early on. That's a common feature of nicotine pouches, and it varies from brand to brand and from person to person.
Moisture and pH both play a part, but neither tells you on its own how quickly you'll feel a pouch. An Altria-funded lab study (Aldeek et al., Scientific Reports, 2026) found that pH didn't change how fast nicotine left the pouch, although a higher pH means more of the nicotine is in a form the mouth absorbs more easily. The same study found that "wetter pouches hit faster" didn't hold across the brands it tested.
If your first pouch feels mild, wait it out. Don't add a second pouch to chase the feeling, and stay within the manufacturer's guidance.
Does stronger snus last longer? No, take it out sooner
A stronger nicotine pouch doesn't last longer. It delivers more nicotine over the same time, so it feels more intense. In the BAT-funded Azzopardi 2025 study, peak nicotine and total exposure rose with both strength and time in. Time to peak depended on how long the pouch was in, not on its strength.
The same study found that Danish and Swedish users kept stronger pouches in for less time. That fits the common-sense advice: the higher the mg, the sooner it can come out.
| Strength band | How it typically feels | Sensible approach to time in |
|---|---|---|
| Low (around 1.5mg–4mg) | Gentle, with flavour to the fore | Follow the time on your pack |
| Medium (around 5mg–9mg) | Noticeable but steady | Follow the pack and take it out if it gets too much |
| Strong (around 10mg–17mg) | Clearly more intense, with more tingle | If you're stepping up, keep the first few sessions shorter |
| Very strong (20mg+) | Intense, and can cause hiccups or nausea if you're not used to it | Only for people already used to strong pouches. Keep sessions short and take it out at the first sign of discomfort |
If you already use nicotine and want to step up, for example from 6mg towards 10mg, go gradually and shorten the time in at first. The 10.2mg Pablo Silver Edition Cold Mint (£3.79) is a standard-format, mid-strength mint that works as a measured next step.
We'd steer anyone not already used to strong pouches away from 20mg and above. For the full mg-by-mg breakdown, see our nicotine pouch strength guide.
Mini, slim or XL: how pouch format changes the feel
Pouch size changes how a pouch behaves over time, separately from its mg. In the BAT-funded Azzopardi 2025 study, a VELO 11mg pouch weighed 0.7g and a 20mg pouch weighed 1.3g, at a similar nicotine concentration. The extra strength came from a bigger pouch. After 30 minutes, 43.7% of the nicotine had been released from the smaller pouch and 36.9% from the larger one. In other words, a bigger pouch gives up a smaller share of its contents in the same time.

To compare format without strength muddying things, take two 3mg ZYNs. The 3mg ZYN Mini Cool Mint (£4.19) sits next to the 3mg ZYN Medium Spearmint (also £4.19), which isn't a Mini. Both have the same mg, but the Mini is smaller and more discreet under the lip, with less material, so it can feel like a lighter, shorter session.
At the other end of the scale are XL pouches, which carry more material and take up more room under the lip. Going by the VELO lab data above, a bigger pouch releases a smaller share of its contents in a given time, although we haven't seen release data for any specific XL product.
The 13.3mg Greatest Cold Dry XL (£3.99) is our big-pouch example. It's also much stronger than either ZYN, so size and strength both shape how it feels. It's one for people already comfortable in the low teens.
Why the flavour goes before the pouch is done
Many people take a pouch out once the mint, ice or fruit fades. That's a fair personal cue, but fading flavour doesn't mean the pouch has stopped releasing nicotine. In lab testing, both flavour and nicotine were still coming through after 30 minutes.
The lab data comes from the BAT-funded Azzopardi 2025 study, which tested a 20mg pouch for 30 minutes. Over that time, about 28% of the flavour compounds and 36.9% of the nicotine had been released. Plenty of both was still left in the pouch. That's why the time on the pack is guidance on how long to keep it in, not a sign the pouch is empty.
Different flavour notes also release at very different rates. Limonene, the citrus note, was 85.1% released, while menthol was only 24.8% released. So a bright citrus top note can disappear early while the pouch is still active. So how quickly a flavour seems to fade depends on the flavour, not just on how long the pouch has been in.
When the flavour goes, check in with how you feel. If you've had enough, take the pouch out. There's no need to "finish" it, and don't swap in a fresh one just to get the flavour back.
When to take a pouch out early
Take a nicotine pouch out straight away if it starts to feel unpleasant. You don't need to wait for the time on the pack. Common signs to watch for:
- Hiccups
- Nausea or an upset stomach
- Dizziness or a headache
- A strong gum burn or a sore mouth
WebMD lists hiccups, gum irritation, a sore mouth and an upset stomach among the side effects of nicotine pouches. In a BAT-funded clinical study (McEwan et al., 2022), dizziness and headache were reported, and most adverse events were mild.
If you feel nic sick, take the pouch out. The feeling usually eases once the source is gone. Don't add another pouch, and contact NHS 111 or a doctor if symptoms are severe or don't settle.
Nicotine is addictive. Stay within the manufacturer's guidance and don't use pouches back to back. Our guide to nicotine pouch side effects covers this in more detail.
How long does an unopened can last?
A sealed can of nicotine pouches keeps until the date printed on it. VELO says its pouches last about a year from manufacture to expiry and that the manufacture date is labelled on every product. That's VELO's figure, though, so check the date on whichever brand you've got rather than assuming a year.
Best-before vs production date vs batch code
Depending on the brand, a can may show a best-before date, a manufacture or production date, or both. Where a best-before date is printed, go by that.
To find the date, look over the label, the base and the sides of the can, plus any sticker. Brands print it in different places.
Don't mistake the batch or lot code for a date. It's a string of letters and numbers the maker uses to trace a production run.
A best-before date is about quality (moisture, aroma and flavour), not a hard cut-off. Past the date, expect drier, flatter pouches. As a common-sense rule, bin any pouch that smells off or shows mould. Swedish Match gives the same advice for its tobacco snus.
How long does snus last after opening?
There's no official days or weeks figure for an opened can of nicotine pouches. An opened can lasts as long as the pouches stay moist and still smell and taste right. VELO's advice is to keep the lid tightly shut and take out one pouch at a time, which slows down drying out.
The five-point freshness check
- Look: any discolouration or mould means bin it.
- Feel: the pouches are noticeably dry and papery compared with a fresh can.
- Smell: flat or stale is a warning sign, and anything musty means bin it.
- Taste: there's no flavour from the first minute.
- Age: check the date on the can.
If your can has a lid compartment, put used pouches there, and never put a used pouch back in with the fresh ones.
Can you reuse a pouch? No. VELO advises against it, and putting a used pouch back in your mouth isn't hygienic.
How long does one can last?
How long a whole can lasts depends on how many pouches it holds and on staying within the manufacturer's daily guidance. Pouch counts vary by brand and range, so check the pack. Our guides to VELO pouches per can and ZYN pouch sizes list them for those brands.
Fridge, freezer or cupboard? Storing snus properly
Store nicotine pouches in their original can, somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sun, heat and damp. VELO also suggests the fridge to help keep them fresh. Freezing is a tobacco snus habit, and we found no pouch-maker guidance recommending it.

Most of the freezer advice online comes from tobacco snus. Swedish Match recommends refrigerating its tobacco snus and freezing it for long-term storage. Its week and month figures apply to tobacco snus, which is illegal to sell in the UK, not to nicotine pouches. Follow the storage instructions on your own can.
Heat dries pouches out and dulls the flavour faster. A can in a jacket pocket hung by the radiator, or one left on a sunny windowsill, will go flat sooner than one kept in a drawer. Snap the lid shut every time so the pouches don't dry out or pick up damp.
Keeping a stash fresh
If you buy several cans at once, keep the unopened ones sealed somewhere cool and dry. Check the dates and open the oldest can first. Open one can at a time rather than having several on the go.
For reference, as of October 2026 our multi-buy discount is 10% off when you buy 10 or more cans, 15% off at 20 or more, and 20% off at 30 or more, applied automatically in the basket. Only buy what you'll get through before the dates on the cans.
FAQs
How long should you keep snus in?
Typical guidance puts it between a few minutes and an hour, depending on the pouch and the person. VELO says up to 30 minutes for its pouches, so check the guidance on your pack. Take it out sooner if it feels too strong, especially with stronger pouches.
Does snus go bad after opening?
An opened can of pouches doesn't go off overnight, but it gradually dries out and loses aroma and flavour. Keep the lid shut and the can cool and dry. Bin any pouch that smells musty or shows mould.
Do nicotine pouches expire?
Yes. Cans carry a best-before or manufacture date, and VELO puts its own shelf life at about a year from manufacture. Past that date, pouches tend to be drier and flatter.
Can you use snus after the best-before date?
A best-before date is about quality, not a hard cut-off, so expect drier pouches with less flavour. Run the five-point check (look, feel, smell, taste and age) before using one. Bin anything that smells off or shows mould.
Can you reuse a snus pouch?
No. VELO advises against reusing pouches, and a used pouch isn't hygienic. Put it in the lid compartment if your can has one, then bin it.
Should you keep snus in the fridge or freezer?
VELO suggests a cool, dry place or the fridge for its pouches. Freezer advice comes from traditional tobacco snus, and we found no pouch-maker guidance recommending freezing. Follow the instructions on your can.
How long does nic sick last?
There's no reliable figure for how long nic sick lasts. Take the pouch out, and the feeling usually eases once the source is gone. Don't add another pouch, and contact NHS 111 if symptoms are severe or don't settle. Our side effects guide has more.
How do I make my pouches stay fresh longer?
Snap the lid shut every time, and keep cans in their original packaging away from heat, sun and damp. Open one can at a time. Check the dates and use the oldest can first.
